Cardinal-Archbishop

Msgr. André Vingt-Trois was born on 7 November 1942 in Paris. He did his secondary studies at Lycée Henri IV (Paris 5th arrondissement). In 1962, he entered the Saint-Sulpice seminary in Issy-les-Moulineaux. He has a theology degree from Paris’s Institut Catholique. In 1964-1965, he did his military service in Germany. On 28 June 1969, Cardinal François Marty ordained him priest for the Paris Diocese. Ministries: - 1969-1974: Vicar of the Ste Jeanne de Chantal parish in Paris. He worked closely on parish catechisms and training lay people.
- 1974-1981: Director of the Saint-Sulpice Seminary in Issy-les-Moulineaux, professor of moral and sacramental theology. He participated in various family pastoral movements, in particular the Marriage Preparation Centre (CPM) and in permanent priest training sessions. - 1981-1999: General Paris Diocese vicar. In particular, he was in charge of diocese training (Cathedral School, Diocese Seminary), communication (Radio Notre-Dame, Paris Notre-Dame, Information Centre), family pastoral activities, public education chaplaincies and catechetics. - 1988: Named assistant bishop of Paris and ordained on 14 October 1988. - 1999: Metropolitan Archbishop of Tours (nominated on 21 April 1999 and took office on 16 May 1999). - On 5 March 2005, he succeeded Cardinal Aron Jean-Marie Lustiger as Archbishop of Paris and Ordinary of Eastern Catholics in France. Msgr. André Vingt-Trois is a member of the Management Board of the Pontifical Council for the Family. At the French Bishop’s Conference, he was a member of the Bishop’s Commission for Revival from 1988 to 1996, a member of the Permanent Committee for Information and Communication from 1988 to 1997 and a member of the Permanent Committee for Economic Affairs from 1997 to 1999, and a member of the Family Commission from November 1998 to November 2005.
